TTK UAS lecturer Toivo Tammik and alumni Veiko Vahtrik and Andres Mägi, from the architectural office AB Ansamber were declared winners of the architectural competition for the extension of Jakob Westholm Grammar School organized by the city of Tallinn.
“According to the jury, the layout solution of the winning design ties the individual courtyards together as a whole. The proposed building fits well into the environment, the facades are articulated and create a distinction between the historic main building and the extension. The compact solution pays attention to achieving energy efficiency and works well as a learning environment; the varied spaces allow for different ways of learning and teaching,” said Rando Kuustik, headmaster of Jakob Westholm Grammar School.
Toivo Tammik said that winning the competition is an important recognition for him just before the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. “I have known this building for over forty years since I went to the Children’s Art School there. Also, all my children have attended this school.”
Tammik is confident that the energy-efficient wooden building planned would fit well into the existing area of predominantly wooden buildings.
The design of the new building is expected to be completed by 2023 and the extension is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
